I’ve been away my holidays back staying with Mandy and I had a super time because I had other dogs with me. There was two Yorkshire Terriers called London and Paris, DJ who was a Toy Poodle and JD a Labradoodle. After we spent considerable time sniffing each other all over we got on extremely well and I thoroughly enjoyed the company. In fact I was so exhausted being on the move all the time that at times I simply flaked out.
I had a better time than Mummy and Daddy. They were on a cruise on the Azamara Quest from Hong Kong to Singapore via the Philippines, Indonesia, Borneo and Malaysia. Unfortunately during their fourth dinner on the ship all the lights went out and the emergency generator kicked in and then it could be seen in the spotlights that there was smoke in the dining room.
The Captain rushed out of the dining room to the engine room and then the signal went for all the passengers to go to their muster stations with their life jackets. I heard Daddy tell a friend that they did this and they waited out on the open deck for two and a half to three hours as the Captain broadcast frequent requests “would so and so please report to the bridge immediately”. These were individuals who could not be accounted for.
What had happened was that a fuel line broke, went on fire and burnt out the main circuit board and the ship lost all power. This meant that there was no air conditioning, no heating, the toilets didn’t work and no power to the kitchen.
After sitting out on deck for quite some time they were led back to their staterooms by crew members using “green light sticks” and spent the night in their staterooms in extremely hot conditions of up to 100 degrees. If only I had been there I’m sure I would have been of help because we dogs can see in the dark much better than humans and we can sniff our way out more easily.
While Mummy and Daddy were on deck spending two and a half days in incredibly hot weather with fairly limited food choice other than barbeques in the evening I was having a super time with Mandy and my new friends.
Sometimes a dog’s life can be better than our owners.
Jennifer came across a poem which she sent to Daddy to read to me and it is absolutely lovely so I have put it on my blog and I hope that other people who like dogs can enjoy it as much as Jennifer, Mummy and Daddy and myself.
A Little Dog Angel
High up in the courts of heaven today
a little dog angel waits;
with the other angels he will not play,
but he sits alone at the gates.
“For I know my master will come” says he,
“and when he comes he will call for me.”
The other angels pass him by
As they hurry toward the throne,
And he watches them with a wistful eye
as he sits at the gates alone.
“But I know if I just wait patiently
that someday my master will call for me.”
And his master, down on earth below,
as he sits in his easy chair,
forgets sometimes, and whispers low
to the dog who is not there.
And the little dog angel cocks his ears
and dreams that his master’s voice he hears.
And when at last his master waits
outside in the dark and cold,
for the hand of death to open the door,
that leads to those courts of gold,
he will hear a sound through the gathering dark,
a little dog angel’s bark.
